We remember the troops and animals who fought bravely alongside each other through warfare and served our country with bravery and honour. The 24th of February is the National Day for War Animals in Australia. However, on ANZAC day, we also value and acknowledge the contributions of animals in war. Donkeys, horses, mules, cats, dogs, birds.. The Museum encouraged New Zealanders to recognise 24 February New Zealand War Animal Memorial Day. A purple poppy can be worn as a symbol of remembrance analogous to the red poppy worn on Anzac Day. Some people like to wear both, to symbolise the close relationship between service personnel and war animals and the importance of remembering both.
