On Friday 17 February, the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) began their three month ‘Big Dig’, which is the final stage of works to remove the level crossings at Union Road, Surrey Hills and Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert. Union Road and Mont Albert Road will be closed at the level crossing until early May.. Construction crews are preparing for the final push to remove the 2 deadly and congested level crossings for good by removing 80 MCG’s worth of soil to dig a 1.3km rail trench, and build a new Union Station. This will include major road disruptions beginning in January, before a major construction blitz gets underway from February 17 to late.

The 2 dangerous and congested level crossings at Union Road, Surrey Hills and Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert have been removed by lowering the rail line into a 1.3km trench. As well as removing the 2 level crossings, we also built a brand-new Union Station. These level crossings were 2 of Melbourne’s worst – the level crossing at Union Road.. Buses are replacing trains ONLY between Ringwood and Lilydale from 8:30pm tonight until 8:30pm Friday, then between Blackburn and Belgrave/Lilydal e until end of Sunday. These works have been advertised on the PTV website ahead of time. Your post makes this seem like a lot more of the line is suspended for a lot longer.
